Helichrysum is an evergreen shrub with aromatic leaves and small button-like flowers. The flowering heads are used and an essential oil is also extracted. It looks very similar to a Lavender in its leaf stage. But, as the picture to the right shows, it looks totally different in bloom. Helechrysum likes it warm and dry. It is native to Turkey and thrives on sunny slopes and grows in Europe and the United States. The plant is a protected species.
Helichrysum oil has a strong straw-like, fruity smell, with a honey and tea undertone. The color can range from pale yellow to red. The viscosity is watery and its main constituents are neryl acetate, nerol, geraniol, pinene, and linalool.
Helichrysum has been studied in Europe for regenerating tissue. It supports healthy skin, nerves, and circulation.* Helichrysum scores 17,430 on the antioxidant ORAC scale.
The therapeutic properties of Helichrysum are anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent. It promotes new cell growth and also provides a defense against harmful free radicals.
The herb contains flavonoids, bitter tasting naringenin, narigenin-5-O-diglucoside, helichrysin A and B and glycosides of apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol and quercetin plus an unidentified antibacterial compound (named arenarin).
Contraindication: Because Immortelle promotes production of bile, you should avoid it if you have a blocked bile duct. If you have gallstones, use of the herb can cause cramps.
