Pomegranates have a large percentage of antioxidants called phytochemicals that protect plant cells from disease and they also have the same effect on humans. Polyphenols (a kind of potent phytochemical), and tannins are found in pomegranates, red wine and green tea. The specific tannin, ellagic acids, in pomegranate are believed to be 3 times stronger than those in red wine and green tea.
Current research shows that ellagic acid benefits for the cardiovascular system. It promotes healthy blood pressure, particularly systolic pressure, which is the peak pressure generated in the arteries when the heart beats. This is accomplished by the increase of nitric oxide production, which keeps blood vessels open. It also helps maintain LDL cholesterol levels already in the normal range. Plus, it supports the health of arterial walls.
There is considerable scientific evidence that ellagic acid protects and preserves the integrity of the cell. Specific to the cells of the breast, prostate, pancreas, esophageal, skin and colon health. Due to an abundance of conclusive data, Dr. Nicholas Perricone (The Perricone Promise) and Dr. Leo Galland (The Fat Resistance Diet) have both named pomegranates to their respective lists of superfoods. Dr. Galland claims that pomegranates, both the whole fruit and the fruit juice, can be very instrumental in with weight loss, particularly for individuals that he describes as “leptin resistant,” and they are prominently featured in all three stages of his highly acclaimed weight loss program.
